Do you need to have talent in order to take singing lessons? Let’s talk about it.

One of the common questions I get asked as a voice teacher is, “If I don’t have any singing talent, can I still take singing lessons as a hobby?”

Every time, I answer, “OF COURSE!”

It may seem obvious that anyone—and yes, I mean anyone!—can take singing lessons, but so many people believe that you have to have talent in order to take lessons, which just isn’t true.

If you want to take on singing as a hobby—even if you have no experience—do it! Singing lessons don’t have to be only for the competitive and professional singers out there. Here are the many reasons why students of mine have signed up for lessons:

  1. A student told me that they always wanted to learn how to sing, and, since singing has helped them relieve stress and anxiety, they wanted to do more of it.

  2. Another student was working on getting in touch with their inner child, and wanted to take lessons to feel playful and creative.

  3. One student really enjoys singing in their car when going to and from work/school, and they wanted to learn how to sing so that they could have more fun singing along to the radio.

  4. For another one of my students, her singing lessons with me are a moment of self care before she picks up her toddler from daycare.

The one thing that all of the students listed above have in common? They were all beginners when they first started singing lessons with me! You can take lessons for any reason, regardless of skill level—whether you’re a beginner that dreams of auditioning for your local theater, or you’re an experienced musician that wants to do something fun for themselves outside of work and school.

Whatever your reason may be for wanting to take lessons, I invite you to get started on your singing journey with a free 30-minute trial lesson with me or a membership through my Curious Singer program! Come join in on the fun and get started with your singing journey today.
